SILVER SASANOF – Ruakaka, 2nd September 2017 – Fell Engineering R75 1400m (jockey Samantha Collett)
Owned by: Floyd Mullineaux, Elliot Wilton & F B Crimmins
This 4yo grey horse defied the odds the day he won. His maiden raceday efforts didn’t match his good 2nd at a trial. And then he lined up in a R75 race – at $100 on the FF! There were some good horses lining up and Silver Sasanof wasn’t fancied at all. However, he took them on, set the terms and he held on admirably for his maiden win. Although a longshot, he had been training well, and the camp thought he could measure up to his opposition. He most certainly did – big celebrations all round that day! (Auckland Committee Member Frances Crimmins is a very proud part-owner of Silver Sasanof).
SASANOF’S HERO – Te Rapa, 6th October 2017 – Harcourts Te Awamutu R65 1600m (jockey Tegan Abel)
Owned by: F B Crimmins
Slow away and well back, this 6yo gelding who has four career wins, came wide with a huge finish down the outside to win by a head. It was a richly deserved win after putting some great place form together over the previous months. From the same dam as Silver Sasanof (Angel’s Honour) this was an extra thrill for owner and Committee Member Frances, having two winners in a short space of time. Patience reaps rewards!
STEPHENSTIHLS – Waverley, 19th November 2017 – C R Grace/Tony Wilson Livestock R65 1650m (jockey Samantha Collett)
Owned by: H F Dyball, P G & T P Gillespie, W J Gleeson, Miss T D Goss & MJM Bloodstock Ltd
Getting up for his fourth win, this 4yo bay gelding has required some patience throughout the year but would have given his owners much pleasure in his recent win in a small field on a Good2 track. He raced handy, led, kicked and held on nicely. Stephenstihls is part-owned by Auckland Racing Club’s Chief Financial Officer, Tim Gillespie, and his dad.

Here’s a 4yo bay mare, by Iffraj, who is showing real ability and rising up the ranks very smartly. Three wins from seven starts is a great effort. Her maiden win came last year, on 28th August 2016, at Te Aroha, and she won again fresh up a year later, at Taupo in August. She followed this up with a splendid win at Ellerslie on Melbourne Cup Day, and then stepped up from R65 company to a R85 benchmark race a month later, pulling off another strong win, also at Ellerslie.
Triple thrills and much joy for her owners since this new season began. Congratulations to all!
SULIMAN – Pukekohe, 12th August 2017 – Ssangyong maiden 2100m (jockey Jason Waddell)
Owned by: Richardson Racing Stables Her Syndicate, I Bourke, R & J Taylor, G Robinson, J & S Brooky, N Tohill, S & S Joseph, D Paulin, T Craig, E Bayly, S Tarrent, K Funnell, B & K Polson, Camici 6 Syndicate & Nickelby Syndicate
Celebrations were indeed in order when this 4yo gelding by Redwood won his maiden race at Counties after some great lead-up form. His large contingent of owners celebrated the moment on an inclement day. Seems Suliman likes Heavy going. Seems he has ability.
Running second to him in the same race that day was … Century Miss … who then went on to win … and win again
CENTURY MISS – Ellerslie, 30th September 2017 – Queenstown House R75 2100m (jockey Michael Coleman)
Owned by: R S Fleming, S Gaylor, A Giles, Mrs K L & R K B Gollan, Ms A M Hughes, Mrs J G & L G Phillips, B J Van Der Saunde, G & Mrs T Y Wilson
This 4yo mare had her second win from six starts, with a flock of owners enjoying the win at Ellerslie. Her maiden win was on 23rd August at Tauranga, which she won easily by 5 ¼ lengths, having run a nice second to Suliman in her previous start at Pukekohe (see above).
KOOL CONNECTION – Tauranga, 23rd August 2017 – Gartshore Maiden 1600m (jockey Michael McNab)
Owned by: W Andrews, W Bradcock, Mrs M C Castle, C E Earl, Ms H Hedley, S A Ironside, R A Papworth & Regal Farm Partnership
Here’s another 4yo bay mare by Iffraj … after some handy form, she went out favourite and fulfilled expectations with a nice run, cruising up on the turn to get her first win. A happy crew welcomed her back to the winner’s stall – and no doubt celebrations ensued.
OURS – Riccarton Park, 5th August 2017 – Avon City Ford Maiden Steeplechase 3200m Premier Meeting (jockey Will Gordon)
Owned by: A E Symes & W J Thurlow
This 6yo gelding is a versatile sort – tackling hurdles, steeples and flat racing over the years. He gave a great sight at Riccarton, on a sunny Canterbury day, to get up for his first steeplechase win with a well-timed finish. He had previously won a maiden on the flat in March 2016, and has put together some good form over recent years.
THE KIPLING GIRL – Pukekohe, 25th November 2017 – HR Fiskens & Sons Open Hcp 1600m, Premier Meeting (jockey Samantha Collett)
Owned by: S Chapman, Mrs S Dower, M W Gething, D King, T R & Mrs V M Pascoe, Mrs N Rochester, Mrs J A Rodgers, Mrs J M Stubbs & Mrs P E M Woollaston
We’ve been keeping a watchful eye on Kip (part-owned by Auckland branch President Mike Gething) and she keeps coming to the party. Her recent win at Counties was about exciting as a finish can get – settled back, wide with cover, challenged in the straight, kept coming, kept coming really fast – and got up. Just! In an Open Handicap race. Actually, she made it by a long head, but it was one of those heart-in-the-mouth finishes – will she, won’t she, will she? Yes, she did. Kip’s owners, wherever they were watching her from, would have been pinching themselves even after the judge made his call; it was a beautiful win.
